Jangkang

This week I had to privilege of going to a village that rarely sees an airplane. We had a call that there was a young father who had an accident and needed to get to a hospital ASAP. So after landing at this village we had a few minutes before they could get this person to the airplane. So during that time several kids gathered on the dock next to the airplane. I was amused to overhear their conversation about the airplane. It went something like this.

"Is it real?"
"I don't know it might not be real."
"Touch it and see if it really is real."
One kid touches the float so I ask, "is it not real?"
"No, it's definitely real!"

In this village there is a strong belief in spirits and things unseen. It's not surprising to think that the kids might not really believe in a physical airplane right in front of them if they haven't seen one before.

Their next conversation revolved around how pointy my nose was. Indonesians noses are pretty flat.

Sean, Wait till you run into the pregnant ladies. There is a belief that if a pregnant lady pinches your nose her baby will also have a pointed nose. Seems like the pointier the better.

Same belief also works for skin tone which is why Laura and my kids get their arms rubbed from time to time.
